El 4 de enero se celebra un "Phonograph Ball" en el Armory Hall de Carson City (Nevada). "Entre cada baile sonarán, a través del fonógrafo perfeccionado de Edison, deliciosas melodías. Los invitados del club podrán escuchar serenatas de Schubert interpretadas por la Gilmore´s Band; selecciones de óperas populares, por la First Regiment Band en San Francisco, un solo de piano por Mrs. Louis Glass, San Francisco; una carta de Thomas Edison, en Londres; una carta de Bill Nye al editor del Morning Appeal; un recitado de George Bromley, de San Francisco; las voces de Gen. Boularger, P.T. Barnurn, President Harrison, Levi P. Morten, Henry Grady, Gladstone, Parnell & Mrs. Langery" (The Sun, NY, 5 de enero de 1890, p.6)
Poco antes del 17 de enero la North American Phonograph publica el primer catálogo de cilindros para fonógrafo, o fonogramas musicales, basado en el programa de grabación llevado a cabo en los laboratorios de Edison desde el 24 de mayo de 1889, y una edición similar fue impresa poco después por New York Phonograph Company. El 25 de enero el Laboratorio Edison anuncia que dejará de fabricar cilindros musicales.
El 7 de febrero la Columbia Phonograph edita su primer catálogo de cilindros. El 24 de febrero la North American, ante la ausencia de cilindros y la creciente demanda de fonogramas, insta a las compañías locales a grabar sus propios discos.
También en febrero se crea la Automatic Phonograph Exhibition Company, que ofrecía la posibilidad de escuchar música en locales públicos mediante un fonógrafo que funcionaba con monedas. En el George W. Driver´s se celebra una exhibición de la "Maravillosa Máquina Parlante de Edison. Mañana y tarde, con fantásticas reproducciones de overturas a cargo de brass bands, corneta, banjo, silbidos y solos vocales" (Evening Star, Washington, 13 de febrero de 1890)
El Humphrey´s Wine Parlors anuncia que "un fonógrafo canta y repite todas las últimas canciones. El único y original McGinty, por Mr. Flynn, toda una orquesta en sí mismo. Una brass band completa cada noche. El último éxito de Shaffer y Blakeley, "The Nigger And The Bee", etc. El último éxito de banjo, por el Professor Well" (Washington Critic, "The Latest Wonder", 28 de marzo de 1890), así como "el dueto de las Washburn Sisters en el fonógrafo, la reproducción más maravillosa jamás oída, asegurando ser, con total seguridad, el único local de la ciudad donde puedes escuchar a la mejor cornetista del mundo, Miss Bessie Gilbert, en el fonógrafo" (Evening Star, Washington, 12 de abril de 1890). Anuncios similares se repiten a lo largo de mes de abril: "Miss Bessie Gilbert puede ser escuchada en el fonógrafo del Humphrey´s Wine Parlors, 415 Thirteenth Street Northwest. Es la más maravillosa reproducción de corneta jamás escuchada. Los duetos de las Whasburn Sisters, cantadas por ellas a través del fonógrafo, suenan tan naturales como la propia voz humana. Es la reproducción más deliciosa jamás escuchada en un fonógrafo, y solo puede ser oída en este local. [También] La nueva canción de Frank Depro, "I´m A Conductor On The Seventh Street Cable Car" (Washington Critic, 24 de abril de 1890).
El 10 de julio el Laboratorio de Edison reanuda los trabajos de grabación de cilindros musicales. En noviembre y diciembre Columbia Phonograph publica dos nuevos catálogos, destacándose como la más importante compañía discográfica del momento.
