HAYDN QUARTET

The Haydn Quartet fue uno de los cuartetos de armonías vocales más populares de principios del siglo XX. Formado en 1896 con el nombre de Edison Male Quartette, la formación original estaba compuesta por John Bieling (tenor), el barítono Samuel Holland Rous (que actuaba con el pseudónimo de S.H. Dudley), William F. Hooley (bajo) y Jere Mahoney (tenor), que pronto fue reemplazado por John Scantlebury Macdonald, más conocido como Harry Macdonough. Hacia 1900 el Edison Male Quartette adquirió el sobrenombre de Haydn Quartet, en homenaje al compositor austríaco, para poder grabar con otras compañías discográficas a parte de Edison.

En 1901 firman contrato con la Victor Talking Machine Company, y en 1902 cruzan el charco para grabar con la Gramophone Company la filial de Victor en el Reino Unido. El grupo tuvo un gran éxito entre 1900 y 1914, siendo, junto con el Peerless Quartet, uno de los más destacados grupos de la época, con canciones ejecutadas a un ritmo pausado y en cierta manera majestuoso. El conjunto también interpretó canciones de vodevil y minstrels, en uno de los cuales, "The Camp Meeting Jubilee" (1904), se incluye la frase "rockin 'and rollin'", aunque en una connotación espiritual.

Hacia 1908 Billy Murray comenzaba a actuar como líder de la formación y S.H. Dudley era a menudo reemplazado por Reinald Werrenrath. Tras las exitosas colaboraciones entre Murray y el Haydn Quartet, Victor organizó en 1910 un nuevo grupo, el American Quartet, con Murray, Bieling, Hooley y el barítono Steve Porter. El Haydn Quartet, renombrado en 1910 como Hayden Quartet, se disolvió en 1914. Macdonough y Hooley, junto con Reinald Werranrath y el tenor Lambert Murphy, formaron el Orpheus Quartet, que grabó con éxito hasta 1919.
