GEORGE J. GASKIN

Cantante estadounidense de origen irlandés (Belfast, 02-1863 - New York, 14-12-1920), uno de los más populares de la primera época del sonido grabado. Emigró a los Estados Unidos de joven, y en junio de 1880 llega a Nueva York, consiguiendo la carta de ciudadanía en octubre de 1892. Sus primeras grabaciones conocidas son realizadas por una submarca de Edison Records, la North American Phonograph Company, en junio de 1891, y pudo haber sido el primer cantante en grabar canciones para Edison, de no habérsele adelantado George W. Johnson, que entró en los estudios de grabación un día antes.

Conocido como "El tenor irlandés de voz plateada", especializado en baladas irlandesas de corte sentimental y canciones populares firmadas por los letristas y compositores de Tin Pan Alley, grabó cerca de 400 discos entre 1894 y 1904 para United States Phonograph Company, Columbia Phonograph Company, y Berliner Gramophone.

Salvo por un cilindro grabado para Everlasting en 1910 y un disco editado por la American Pathé en 1916, interrumpió su carrera discográfica en 1904 para concentrar toda su atención en los conciertos que el Phillip Sheridan club celebraba anualmente en honor de Robert Emmett, actividad que mantuvo hasta 1910.
