En el invierno de 1888-1889 Reginal De Koven (1859-1920) escribió su ópera cómica de mayor éxito, Robin Hood, con letra de Harry B. Smith (1860-1936). Después de la noche del estreno en la Opera House de Chicago, el 9 de junio de 1890, la contralto que interpretaba al juglar Alan-a-Dale, Jessie Bartlett Davis (1860-1905), exigió una canción con la que poder lucir mejor su voz, amenazando con abandonar la producción. Para darle gusto De Koven insertó en el libreto un tema que había compuesto junto al letrista Clement Scott en 1887, "Oh Promise Me", que se convirtió en todo un éxito.

La partitura vendió más de un millón de copias en 1890 y continuó ganando popularidad durante varias décadas, siendo interpretada por muchos artistas. La canción sigue siendo muy utilizada, tanto como canción de bodas o en funerales.
