Conocida como "Araby´s Daughter", la melodía del compositor y violinista George Kiallmark (1781-1835) fue publicada en 1822 por J. Power (Stationer´s Hall, Londres). La balada, como reza en la portada de la primera edición, está basada en el famoso poema "Lalla Rookh", del escritor irlandés Thomas Moore (1779-1852), publicado en Inglaterra en la primavera de 1817. Por otra parte "The Old Oaken Bucket" es un poema del poeta norteamericano Samuel Woodworth (1784-1842), compuesto en Nueva York durante el verano de 1817 y publicado en el Republican Chronicle el 3 de junio de 1818, con el título de "The Bucket" y bajo el pseudónimo de "Selim".
Pronto "The Bucket" se convertirá en canción, asociado a la popular melodía de Kiallmark. La primera partitura conocida del poema "The Old Oaken Bucket" junto con la melodía de "Araby´s Daughter" aparece en The Amateur´s Song Book (Boston, 1843) si bien la letra y música más extendidas son las incluidas en The Boston Melodeon (Boston, 1846), con los arreglos de E.L. White.

A pesar de que la canción se hizo muy popular dentro del repertorio de los cuartetos vocales, uno de los primeros registros sonoros conocidos es un cilindro de la Columbia Phonograph Company grabado por la Columbia Brass Band a finales de 1889 o principios de 1890.
